Waterways Chaplains
Chaplains are volunteers from local churches who regularly visit the waterways, offering help, companionship and a listening ear to individuals and businesses. We are interested in whomever we meet, be they boaters, cyclists, walkers, runners, anglers or canal workers.
There are many ways a Waterways Chaplain can offer support to those who live on and use the UK’s waterways … here’s an example of just some of them:
- Food parcels
- Support/ intermediary through dealings with Authorities e.g. CRT, Local Councils, benefit claims
- Help with laundry, getting fuel etc
- Coffee and a chat
- Calling out an engineer through our retainer account with River Canal Rescue (RCR)
- Boat Blessings
We also do work parties once a month on the canal in the warmer months!
Could you become a volunteer Waterways Chaplain?
Are you a Christian, a good listener and able to walk around a mile of waterways a week?
The Christian ministry of a volunteer Waterways Chaplain is to be pastorally proactive and spiritually reactive. As part of this, we work to build up relationships and be part of the lives of all those we meet. Many value having someone to listen and someone to talk issues through with to try to find a way forward.
Chaplains share in the good and bad times and are supportive and encouraging of all, regardless of religion, orientation or race. We support people of all faiths and none and are happy to discuss spiritual and practical matters if invited to do so.
