The Quiet Revival

Have you heard the news? It’s so much better than the BBC would have you believe! The church in the UK has grown from 8% of the population in 2018 to 12% of the population in 2024. Or to put it another way 5.8 million people in the UK are churchgoers which is an increase of 2.1 million in just 6 years. If you want to read the full story then search for Bible Society, The Quiet Revival.
What’s more young men aged 18-24 are leading the way. In 2018 juts 4% of them went to church and now 21% of men aged 18-24 are going to church. The survey was conducted by YouGov, and the sample size was more than 13,000 people so it looks as if we can trust the statistics. We don’t really know why but it might be about mental health and wellbeing. 80% of young churchgoers say “My life feels meaningful” compared with just 53% of non-church goers. Similarly, 84% of young churchgoers feel “hopeful about my future” and only 56% of non-churchgoers.
It is also fascinating to see the huge contribution that churchgoers make to their local community. 27% of non-church goers give to charity regularly compared to 57% of churchgoers. 20% of non-church goers have donated to a foodbank compared to 40% of churchgoers. 12% of non-church goers volunteer with a community group compared to 41% of nonchurch goers. It seems like Christianity gives us hope and this hope shows itself in action.
So, if you are a young person then I can promise you a warm welcome at St Lawrences, Hungerford. And for those of us who are no longer young let’s do our utmost to befriend young adults, to pray for them, to invite them and bring them to come and see what is going on down at the church. I love Good News!
